Day 5 -- The LONG Haul

The Long Haul: Today was a very long drive. We woke up and left at about nine a clock. Our first stop was Martin’s cove. Martin’s cove is owned and run by the LDS church. The fort at Martin’s Cove (Fort Seminoe) was like a convenience store back in the 1840. When the pioneers came through they were freezing and they knocked down one of the buildings and made a huge fire. Many of the Mormon Handcart Company that got stuck there in an early winter storm in 1947 died. They were finally rescued by people who were already in Salt Lake. The folks there were very nice. We took a tour of Sun ranch. The Sun family ranch was about 1.2 million acres at its peak years. John Sun was also good friends with Buffalo Bill. Buffalo Bill was given two guns that were the only two that were made. Buffalo Bill gave John Sun one of those guns and we got to see that gun. Our next stop about ten miles of the road, Independence rock. This rock is 1900 feet long and 140 feet high. Jordan and I went for a climb. When we got to the top we saw many signatures ranging from 1856 to 2009. We went back to the rest stop and ate lunch. From there we all got some driving experience. We next went to an area where the ruts where the wagons went though. We all carved our names it the rocks. In all we traveled about 800 miles today. We rolled into Embassy Suites at about four o clock in the morning.
p.s. we’ve traveled over a quarter of the United States.
